15:09:40raptorgood morning!
16:50:12watusimotohi
16:50:21raptorhi
16:50:46watusimotothe luaW author is going to integrate my caching idea
16:50:57raptorcool!
16:51:40watusimotohe says it simplifies other aspects of luaw; I agree, but haven't done much of that work. It will be nice to see what he does.
16:51:59raptormaybe he'll fix our problem! :)
16:52:08watusimotothat would be nice
16:52:27watusimototonight I'll test my theory about it being related to the metatables changing somehow
16:53:46raptorok
16:58:24watusimotoso the desura guy asked for the list of dependencies (which I gave him) and independently wrote this:
16:58:28watusimoto"You also need to upload standalone versions for Linux."
16:58:54watusimotoshould I clarify that he really needs this, or is this something easy to generate?
17:02:54raptorwaiat
17:03:00raptorhe said that about standalone?
17:03:26raptorbecause i created standalone build for linux and uplaoded them as MCFs
17:04:21raptorif he said that, then i'm not sure how he defines 'standalone'
17:04:43raptori could see that meaning 'static' builds - which will be messy
17:29:25watusimotoyou uploaded one or two linux builds?
18:07:04kodaws Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
18:08:46watusimoto Quit (Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
18:14:43kaenI'm sure he means static builds
18:15:09kaenyou don't want people's weird versions of glibc crashing your game really
18:16:18kaenit used to be a big problem with commercial linux games (the few there were)
18:17:03kaenthere was some company that would port windows games to linux, and almost invariably you have to override the LDPATH with oldschool alsa and glibc binaries to run them now
18:18:54kaenthere's -staticlibc or something like that for gcc. and you may need to use a little `ar -d` if you get redefinition errors
18:20:06raptorback
18:20:40raptori converted both debian 5.0 debs (i386, x86_64) into standalone bundles
18:21:00raptorso older glibc
18:21:18raptorand uploaded them to desura... and he's gone... hmmm
18:28:00raptorkaen: i bet your cmake system would make building static easier...
18:32:51kaenI think you're right.

19:42:59kaenthis may be is close as I ever get...
19:43:04kaenas close*
19:43:15raptori use VMs, too.. i even have visual studio installed in one
19:43:26kaenI think I'm going to try building with it

20:16:59bobdaducklol
20:17:05bobdaduckWHOO SNOW
20:17:12bobdaduckI saw a snow plow on my way to work.
20:17:18bobdaduckIt wasn't plowing, it was just driving.
20:18:23Nothing_Muchlol
20:18:35bobdaduckDespite
20:18:46bobdaduckthere being about six inches of snow on the roads.
20:19:34bobdaduckDriving to work was a blast.
20:27:51kaenI hate windows so much
20:28:04Nothing_MuchWindows is lame
20:28:26kaenI'm not often confronted with that fact
20:28:38Nothing_MuchIt's basically just marketing
20:28:49kaendefinitely.
20:29:37bobdaduckNot as lame as our current forum emoticons!
20:29:48Nothing_MuchIf Apple were to make a compare and contrast for OSX, they'd have the benefit
20:29:52Nothing_MuchAs I did my own comparison
20:30:45Nothing_MuchWith Dell at least
20:31:09Nothing_MuchTo get the same amount of RAM and a Core i7, it's only 100$ more than the Dell, but with a MUCH better GPU
20:32:05kaenthat's interesting.
20:32:16kaenI'm looking to upgrade machines soon
20:32:35bobdaduckMy understanding is that apple makes good hardware.
20:32:43bobdaduckApple computers are great, once you install windows on them.
20:32:51kaen...
20:32:53Nothing_MuchNope
20:32:54kaen.......
20:32:57Nothing_MuchOSX is much better dude
20:32:59bobdaducklol
20:33:01kaenbobdaduck you're trolling me.
20:33:01Nothing_MuchNot as good as Linux
20:33:04Nothing_MuchBut srsly
20:33:11Nothing_MuchOSX is the most stable OS I've ever used
20:33:14bobdaduckAm I?
20:33:15bobdaduckGood to know
20:33:17Nothing_MuchMore stable than Linux
20:33:21bobdaduckI'm never quite sure who I'm trolling
20:33:31bobdaduckEvery time I get on an apple computer
20:33:35bobdaduckit crashes within ten minutes.
20:33:37Nothing_MuchBecause with Linux, there's some configuration error depending on which distro you use
20:33:48Nothing_MuchWhat Apple computer did you use?
20:34:07bobdaduckNo, not one single apple computer.
20:34:15bobdaduckEvery time I have ever gotten on an apple.
20:34:36bobdaduckWhich, admittedly, is only like 20 times
20:34:37bobdaduckbut still.
20:34:53Nothing_MuchWere they PPC or Intel based?
20:35:13bobdaduckAnd its not an understandable crash, like if I was messing around with settings or something. I hit exit on games and they crash, I leave the computers for ten minutes then come back and they're froze, etc.
20:35:24bobdaduckI don't know. I had to use them for school
20:35:28bobdaduckAnd I didn't really care.
20:36:00kaenyou bought 20 apple computers?
20:36:12kaenif they all crashed on you like that I'd have stopped at two.
20:36:13bobdaduckNo I had to use apple computers for school
20:36:25kaenoops misread
20:36:27Nothing_Much"school"
20:36:30Nothing_Muchdon't trust those
20:36:30kaengotten on*
20:36:32bobdaduckI would never buy something from apple on principle xD
20:36:40Nothing_Muchyou need first hand experience
20:36:44kaenI would never buy software
20:36:45Nothing_Muchby buying one or renting one
20:36:47kaenon principle
20:36:56bobdaducklol
20:37:05kaenI haven't in like ten years
20:37:22kaenlast time I bought a game/software was the roller coaster tycoon expansion pack
20:38:45bobdaduckWhy would I buy or rent an apple computer
20:39:00bobdaduckwhen every apple computer I have ever used has been terrible
20:39:11bobdaduckand every windows computer I've ever used I've been satisfied with?
20:39:14Nothing_Muchdon't trust the school's computers
20:39:21Nothing_Muchpeople like to fuck with them
20:39:23Nothing_Muchalso
20:39:27Nothing_Muchwhat color were the Macs?
20:39:30raptora flame war!
20:39:39bobdaduckwhite like all macs
20:39:45bobdaduckApple makes everything white
20:39:48Nothing_Muchthose are the PPC versions
20:39:49bobdaduckbecause apple is the master race
20:39:51kaenit didn't take much, raptor
20:39:52Nothing_Muchthe newer ones are aluminum
20:39:55Nothing_Muchthey're way better
20:40:19Nothing_Muchso your school probably had defective iMacs
20:40:34raptorkaen: froma purely functional point of view, i find my personality cannot handle windows that well (too restricted), and OSX is even worse
20:40:40Nothing_Muchhttp://www.apple.com/
20:40:47Nothing_Muchcheck out their newer iMacs
20:40:48bobdaduckThis isn't just my school
20:40:53kaensimilarly for me
20:40:55bobdaduckEvery apple I've ever used in any setting.
20:41:15bobdaduckGet on one at a friends house: Crashes when I try to close saffari
20:41:39Nothing_Muchguess you must have pretty bad luck lol
20:41:41kaenbobdaduck, you should send apple a bug report.
20:41:41Nothing_Muchshame too
20:41:47raptorbobdaduck: that's because everyone bought the 'macs don't have viruses' lie - when in reality they all do.. :)
20:41:49bobdaduckGet on one at a DIFFERENT school: Freezes randomly and no less than pulling out the plug turns it off
20:42:01bobdaduckMACS ARE VIRUSES.
20:42:04bobdaduck:P
20:42:13raptorhobbits are a virus
20:42:24kaenebola is a virus
20:42:40kaenhobbits are fictional creatures raptor
20:43:00raptorheh, brings back memories of having the 'Stoned' virus on my windows 3.1+DOS computer
20:43:01bobdaduckIts okay
20:43:06bobdaduckI live in a fictional world.
20:43:28raptorit would scramble the screen, print 'legalize marijuana' then crash the computer
20:43:43bobdaduckWhere apples are as unreliable as everyone tells me windows computers are
20:43:53bobdaducklol
20:44:01Nothing_MuchHow old were those Macs?
20:44:15Nothing_MuchHonestly you most likely had the worst luck from anything
20:44:26Nothing_MuchFor me, I've had the best luck for all 3 os's
20:45:05bobdaduckThey were probably around three years old
20:45:06bobdaduckOr
20:45:11bobdaduckmaybe they were current.
20:45:15bobdaduckSomewhere within that range.
20:45:42Nothing_MuchIf they were current, then why were they white/
20:45:43Nothing_Much?
20:45:58bobdaduckWhen I was in school
20:46:03bobdaduckThis was years agoo
20:46:04bobdaduckxD
20:46:10bobdaduckI've graduated now, mind you.
20:46:20Nothing_Muchwell then
20:46:28Nothing_MuchApple's definitely improved
20:46:31Nothing_Muchby now
20:46:57bobdaduckI'll take your word for it :)
20:47:41raptorquick kaen, what's a simple encryption algorithm I can use to obsfuscate some text with a key and easy to program
20:47:47Nothing_MuchI'd get a Mac Mini, in fact I wanna get one, but I'll wait for Haswell to come out
20:47:48raptor(don't say ROT13)
20:47:56kaenXOR
20:47:59raptorhaha
20:48:06kaenI was going to say rot13 lol
20:48:08kaenyou're a cool dudde
20:48:44raptori need to be able to take any text, scramble it with a key, then pass it as a URL parameter (so maybe base64 encode as a second step..)
20:49:10raptorbut, it needs to be simple, and I may need to implement it in both java and javascript... :-/
20:49:53kaenand you really can't use the xor cipher?
20:50:20raptordoesn't that require the cipher text be the same length as the plain text?
20:50:50kaenif you're putting it through a url it's not going to be longer than 2k right?
20:50:54raptorha!
20:51:00raptori knew you were going to mention that...
20:51:13raptori supposed it will be less than 100 characters or so
20:51:18raptorso yeah, that'll work
20:51:26kaeneasy squeezy
20:51:36raptorsometimes my head gets caught up in the complicated..
20:51:40kaenme too!
20:51:50kaenI needn't tell you, though :)
20:56:45kaenheh. vc++ is hurting my feelings a little bit.
20:56:53kaenmaybe I should turn on -Wall in gcc now...
20:56:53raptorhow so?
20:56:56bobdaduck Quit (Ping timeout: 245 seconds)
20:57:09kaena bunch of compiler errors that I don't get from gcc
20:57:20raptoroh yeah... vc++ errors... level 3 is silent and level 4 is like (YOU STINK AT CODING MORON)
20:57:35kaenand then I made a debug build
20:57:45kaenand found vc++'s runtime error detection
20:58:11kaenwhich, obviously, detected some runtime errors
20:58:16raptorheh

21:01:32Nothing_Muchhow and what would they look like?
21:01:43bobdaduckWell
21:01:45kaencool and ships
21:01:47kaenrespectively
21:01:48bobdaduckYou have a bitfighter ship
21:01:54bobdaduckAnd then you make it happy
21:01:58bobdaduckand viola
21:02:02bobdaduck:)

21:03:03bobdaduckI DEMAND BITFIGHTER EMOTICONS
21:04:20raptorok, cat /dev/urandom doesn't give me an easy string cipher...
21:04:29raptori don't know what i was expecting...

21:49:13raptornow to figure how to XOR decrypt in JS..
21:51:55bobdaduckI will draw some more extremely helpful concept art once I get off work
21:53:47kaenraptor, charCodeAt and ^
21:53:56kaenare probably what you're looking for...
21:54:19Watusimotothat or a cyanide pill
21:54:38kaenyes, also make sure to bring lots of cyanide
21:55:40kaen is now known as hail
21:55:41raptorcyanide swallowed
21:56:01hail is now known as kaen
21:56:19bobdaducklol
21:56:32kaenokay now you should be ready to write some javascript
21:59:15raptorWatusimoto: i had this idea of a *true* level gallery on bitfighter.org
21:59:40raptora hookin to a database, with author, map name, version, screenshot, etc..
22:00:01raptor(this is apart from my suicidal JS project)
22:00:07Watusimotowhere would the database live?
22:00:09bobdaducklol
22:00:24raptorbitfighter.org mysql
22:00:32Watusimotoso a central repo of levels?
22:00:35raptoryes
22:00:48Watusimototo what end?
22:00:49raptori haven't figured out details of submission, etc.
22:01:11Watusimotoit's an intriguing idea
22:01:13raptorit seems that in the past few weeks people have been constantly looking for old levels
22:01:33Watusimotoso it would basically be a level encyclopedia of sorts
22:01:36raptoryes
22:01:50raptori know we have the forums level archives...
22:01:50Watusimotoeverything would go in?
22:02:01Watusimotoor would you manually submit?
22:02:12raptoryes, but i need to figure out how to submit
22:02:26raptorso people can update their levels, etc..
22:02:40Watusimotook, so someone would have to decide to include their level
22:02:46Watusimotoand could update it
22:02:55raptorcorrect
22:03:01raptorbut i'm open to other possibilities
22:03:01kaenand there'd be an authoritative source...
22:03:03kaennice.
22:03:03Watusimotomaybe people could comment on them
22:03:09raptorthat too
22:03:11Watusimotoor rate them
22:03:23raptorjust like the forums!
22:03:25Watusimotomaybe we could tie that into the in-game rating system we keep talking about
22:03:40raptorbut the forums seem clunky for searching, e.g. like on author
22:04:06Watusimotomaybe you could host levels that lived in the database
22:04:18kaenwhoa
22:04:23raptorinteresting idea...
22:04:25Watusimotowe'd need a unique key though
22:04:26raptoryeah
22:04:32kaenUUID
22:04:33raptorfdjkaslf;j34k;qf4'sajf434
22:04:35raptordone
22:04:35Watusimotomd5 wouldn't cut it if people could update
22:04:46raptoryeah
22:04:47kaenusername-timestamp
22:04:50raptorit would be quite the project
22:04:56Watusimotook, so we have an arbitrary key
22:04:59raptorbut i thought it would be neat
22:05:11Watusimotoand the original submitter has a password?
22:05:18Watusimotofor the updating?
22:05:21raptorsure
22:05:23raptoranything
22:05:30kaenwhy not hook it into phpbb?
22:05:30Watusimotoand if they forget?
22:05:34Watusimotoyes
22:05:40WatusimotoI was just going to say that
22:05:42bobdaduckWhat would this accomplish?
22:06:00kaenit could stimulate constructive dialog about map quality
22:06:16kaenand also everything else stated above
22:06:49Watusimotowhy does this line crash bitfighter?
22:06:50Watusimotostring val = string(lua_tostring(L, -1));
22:06:52raptorbecause right now the best way to search for maps is to go on 'Sam Test' and hope it's there
22:07:03Watusimotosamtest is our database!
22:07:08raptorhaha
22:07:15bobdaducklol
22:07:24Watusimotothat line crashes the string function itself
22:07:30raptorwhat?
22:07:46bobdaduckthe -1
22:07:46raptorthat's odd
22:07:53bobdaduckis being square root
22:07:58bobdaduckcomes out with an imaginary number
22:07:59bobdaduckand crashes.
22:08:00Watusimotocreepy
22:08:03kaen...
22:08:30Watusimotook, so we have this database of levels... what if you could host on an sql query?
22:08:39raptoryes, i like that idea
22:09:00raptorlevel transmits, loads, and tada!
22:09:03Watusimotoyou'd proabably want to submit from in game
22:09:18Watusimotomaybe
22:09:18raptorwe could let authenticated users do that
22:09:21Watusimotoyes
22:09:33raptoranyways, just an idea.. HUGE project
22:09:37Watusimotoyes
22:09:46Watusimotocould start small -- submit only
22:10:10Watusimotothen do a quick and dirty level browser
22:10:32Watusimotowhich would not require authentication
22:10:40Watusimotothat alone might be useful
22:10:43bobdaduckWould we be able to see images of maps ingame?
22:10:49raptoridea taken partly from the game 'xmoto'
22:11:07Watusimotoeventually probably yes
22:11:12raptorthey let you hook into their database in-game, download a level and play it right there
22:11:19Watusimotogreat
22:11:37Watusimotomaybe we could have a function that tells you if the name opf the level you are editing is a dupe of an existing level
22:12:32Watusimotowe could have a level contest submit feature that kept levels from being included in queries until after contest is over
22:13:10Watusimotomark levels as being favorites
22:13:20Watusimotoor bookmarks
22:13:26Watusimotoor playlists
22:13:55bobdaduckWould that remove a sense of ownership from people hosting a server?
22:14:28Watusimotowhy would it? do you lose ownership when you have a party because everyone has access to the same music you do?
22:14:35Watusimotoit's your custom mix
22:14:47Watusimotoand you wouldn;t need to submit your levels
22:14:54raptorwait, are you suggesting we scrape levels from servers by the master?
22:15:11WatusimotoI did briefly, but wasn't
22:15:32Watusimotono
22:15:40WatusimotoI think people would volunatarily submit
22:16:17Watusimotowe could use md5 to cache levels locally with preview images
22:17:33Watusimotoit's an interesting idea
22:20:00raptorso what are our future plans? 018a, then...
22:20:01Watusimotowe'd haev to figure how to handle levelgens
22:20:13Watusimoto018a then ideas from google
22:20:25raptorlevelgens might need to be stored separately or in-file somehow
22:20:39WatusimotoI keep thinking in-file is the way to go
22:20:47Watusimotobut I haven't worked out exactly how
22:20:50raptori smile everytime i look at our level loading code... with all of the goto statements
22:20:57bobdaducklol
22:21:13Watusimotoyeah... it's a bear, but it's efficient and it works so I don't want to touch it!
22:21:32Watusimotoall that can happen is it can get buggier

22:59:33raptorWatusimoto: I put back the armor slippy-slide
23:00:12raptori was talking with bobdaduck about what to do with armor... he suggested some ways we could 'save' it
23:00:24raptorlike increase the armor over time somehow
23:00:48raptoror have a passive ability to add extra armor (by levels maybe, up to 3 or 4)
23:02:30bobdaduckEverytime you get hit your armor reinforces itself slightly
23:03:02bobdaduckSo the longer you survive, the more tanky you become
23:03:13raptor^^ that too
23:04:09WatusimotoPersonally, I find the slippy effect sooo annoying
23:04:23bobdaduckIts currently armor's only redeeming quality though.
23:04:41Watusimotoyes, but for completely independent reasons
23:04:45Nothing_MuchTo balance it out?
23:04:48raptori put it back because client-side predicting was making movement really stuttery on 018 servers..
23:05:00Watusimotoyeah, it will have to be a 019 change
23:05:35bobdaduckMy thought was what if we added double-tap options to all the modules, and then made armors really overpowered?
23:05:38WatusimotoNothing_Much: the ideas was to offset armor's passive abilities
23:05:55bobdaduckIt would let armor compete with shield, because currently it just doesn't.
23:07:11Watusimotoagreed, it doesn't
23:07:32Watusimotobut maybe vulnerability to bouncers might offset the goodness of proper movement
23:08:36raptorwell, i think it could be saved - we just need to figure out something else to add or make some other adjustment
23:08:43raptoror 2 or 3
23:08:56bobdaducklol
23:12:44Watusimotowhat if armor got used up and didn't regen?
23:12:58Watusimotoso it could absorb (say) 10 shots then stop working
23:13:08raptorhmm... interesting idea!
23:13:15Watusimotoor maybe each panel could absorb 10 shots
23:14:03raptorbobdaduck: what do you think?
23:14:15bobdaduckEw.
23:14:23bobdaduckHard to graphically simulate
23:14:27bobdaduckand makes it even worse
23:14:36bobdaduckEspecially compared to shield.
23:14:39raptorbut without panels
23:14:48raptorwe could just easily reduce the thickness
23:15:14bobdaduckOkay
23:15:21bobdaduckeven if you can convey that graphically
23:15:27bobdaduckHow does that help armor at all?
23:15:33bobdaduckI think that makes it worse...
23:15:36raptormakes it more valuable
23:15:44raptoryou don't lose health until its gone
23:15:51bobdaduckShield
23:15:57bobdaduckYou don't lose health until its gone
23:16:15bobdaduckBringing this up again: make armor a pickupable.
23:22:21Watusimotothat might work
23:22:31Watusimotowould add a new element to the game
23:23:20bobdaduckIf map makers used it responsibly
23:23:29Watusimotolike engineer
23:23:33bobdaduckNo
23:23:38bobdaduckEngineer can't be used responsibly.
23:24:36bobdaduckI maintain my position that the only way to use engineer is in fortress-building competitions, and that every level it is used on will invariably be won by the team with the most engineers on it.
