10:29:59raptorgood day!
10:37:59raptorI almost lost my work laptop this morning - i had left it on the roof of the car while travelling 50 MPH down the road to work

13:03:58watusimotohello
13:04:04watusimotoman, taxes are killing me
13:04:11Invisible has joined
13:04:31raptorTAXES, TAXES!
13:04:33watusimotoform 1116 is the most convoluted roundabout unclear craptacular form
13:04:34Invisible is now known as Guest65150
13:05:13raptorforeign tax credit... that's right, you have some extra complexity this year
13:05:17watusimotoand after spending an hour figuring it out every year, I end up with the same result... essentially a nullop
13:05:22watusimotooh man
13:06:07watusimotoforeign earned income; moving; rental property (partial year); but wait! there's more!
13:06:20watusimotothen I need to do Oregon taxes again
13:06:47watusimotopartail year, again, adding to the complexity (every income item/deduction must be allocated to state or non-state)
13:07:42watusimotoI'm an honest tax payer; but if I weren't, there's a lot of judgement in my return this year
13:07:50raptorhah
13:08:01raptorwhat do you think your risk of audit would be?
13:08:07watusimotovery low
13:08:23watusimotoat least that's what my tax program says
13:08:41watusimotoI didn't have most of the income types I warned you about earlier
13:09:20raptori used H&R Block this year. the interface was the best i'd seen yet
13:09:29watusimotoand my situation is a bit unusual, so I may not fall into any of the neat audit categories
13:09:37watusimotothat's what I use too
13:09:47watusimotothe UI is good until you need to do 1116
13:09:54raptoroh?
13:10:00watusimotoand then it sux0rs major big time
13:10:14watusimotoit basically dumps you to their version of the form, with very little guidance
13:10:37watusimotoit would be really easy to automate that form for common cases (taxes reported by mutual funds)
13:11:04watusimotoI've been using tax cut for years, and I know where it falls short
13:11:47watusimotoat least this year they had the common Oregon tax credits that I take every year in a form (rather than forcing you to remember them and look up the codes and manually enter them)
13:12:05watusimotoOR gives every tax payer $50 to contribute to political campaigns
13:12:15watusimotothat's a straight credit (not a deduction) use it or lose it
13:13:38watusimotosee this?

13:15:59watusimotoalso... shashdot has some good stories today!
13:16:19watusimoto(especially if you are up on your sci-fi)
13:21:02raptori gave up slashdot years ago
13:21:15raptorbut maybe as an rss feed it may still be OK...
13:21:40watusimotowell, check it today
13:21:54raptorOH WAIT
13:21:57raptorit that's time of year!
14:11:53watusimotoalso... have you seen the pacman option on google maps?
14:22:52raptorwhat? no
14:22:57raptorhow do i get to that?
14:23:15raptornever mind...
14:25:52raptorplaying in downtown provo now
14:34:17watusimotoit's well done

15:15:44watusimotoyes, probably so. is it all done client side? it would be interesting if they managed to do it all in the demon js
15:16:11raptori suspect the must do much of it client side
15:16:14raptor*they

17:18:45raptorI'm afriad I'm a bit stuck on the rendering refactor - there are two things that are difficult to convert to the abstraction layer without more complex methods: the logo rendering and the stars rendering
17:19:23raptorit may not really be that difficult, just that my tired head can't handle it late at night
17:19:51raptori think i have an idea forward with rendering the logo, but the stars are much more complex..
17:38:56raptorthat IRS story is crazy!

18:57:28watusimotooooh... the logo rendering
18:58:30watusimotothat, I would think, could be converted to a simple set of render_line_loops, if it hasn't already been, which would be similar to rendering, say, a box or whatnot
18:58:45watusimotoeach letter is just a long list of coords, no?
19:00:10watusimotothe stars... well... that is just a mess, I agree. The concept is pretty basic, though; render a set of points. I imagine it could be rewritten to use some sort of 3-d transform to get the same effect via different means
19:00:25watusimotoI assume it is the 3-dishness that is the problem
19:04:14raptoryes, it's gltranslate with dynamic stuff
19:04:16raptorsorry, gotta go!

21:50:37raptornow for the stars... while i'm still slightly mentally inclined

22:01:25watusimotoyay logo!
22:01:54watusimotothe stars were something I did when I very first started with Bitfighter... I really had no idea what I was doing, so it may be pretty screwy
22:02:07raptori have to reverse engineer the math first
22:02:31watusimotomaybe reengineer it... or perhaps just engineer it!
22:03:45raptori could probably do some significant optimization here..
22:03:55raptoror at least simplification
22:03:58raptoronce i get the math
22:04:32watusimotook, well I got to head home before the rain starts again
22:04:39raptorlater!
22:04:43watusimototalk to you later... more taxes in my future. :-(
