Distorted Party: Friday 8/29

Get ready for a head scratcher!

The Distorted Levels party will feature traditional Bitfighter levels flipped, rotated, and shifted in a variety of game modes to entertain veterans and new users alike. It's the rockin' party you all know and love spun on its head, designed to test your instincts and memory.

Tangle Box... FLIPPED!
Geo-war... SHRUNK!
Airlock... UPSIDE DOWN!

One of Bitfighter's crowning achievements are its levels -- new and old, levels continue to bring incredible fun to this neat little game. The Distorted Levels party will add a new twist to the levels we've all played over and over. An action as simple as a 15 degree rotation, when applied to a frequently-played level, can significantly change the way its perceived and played and totally mess with our brains! Come and experience levels in a way you've never experienced before.

The party will feature a custom playlist of at least 20 levels so we're sure to not get bored with bad maps. Afterwards we can play the maps as they were originally designed, resulting in a massive brain 'splosion!

WHEN: Friday, August 29th at 9:00 PM EDT
WHERE: "Distorted Levels Party" or sky_lark host
RSVP: Go ahead and comment if you plan to attend, are considering attending, or would love to attend but just can't make it. With a small community like ours, estimated attendance information is critical. If there aren't enough responses by a few hours before the party begins, I'll sadly cancel or postpone.

But let's make this thing-a-ding happen! Discuss below.

Re: Distorted Party: Friday 8/29

Are they good maps? Because I'd like to also livestream this on hitbox.tv, but the thing is, when there's bad maps that aren't symmetrical or just downright random, it can get confusing, especially when you're landed right on go-fasts just zipping by god knows what. Are there any screencaps of the maps on hand?

Also, let's make stages last longer than 5 seconds, which means please know what maps are gonna be in it and which maps aren't. Frankly, I'm not a fan of wasting time searching for levels that shouldn't even be in the server at that moment.

I dig it.

Unfortunately I will be moving into my dorm at my Uni that day, so I doubt I'm going to be able to attend. Maybe, though. 6pm for me. Hmm.

It's a smaller Twitch.tv website for streaming, it's also almost lag free in regards to the chatroom. However, since I'm not well known at all, it'd be pointless, but it's made for smaller people such as myself, so I'll probably be using Hitbox.tv over Twitch.tv

Umm... OK. You basically just said it yourself, lol; no one's gonna see it. Better Hitbox than nothing, but Twitch would obviously be the better pick.

Problem with Twitch is that they're flooded with a TON of mainstream streamers, Hitbox is the better pick for the smaller crowd.

Don't worry, the level playlist will be compiled with the intention of selecting quality maps. Now I will warn you that this is a novelty party, so there might be a couple novelty-ish levels. But the foremost goal is to definitely avoid the bad apple levels and have a good time. I'll also put some thought into what a stream viewer might see. Thanks for offering to stream!

What do you mean by "stages last longer than 5 seconds?"

Searching for maps while in the game is lame. Such as a map that lands a ship on a gofast and then you press C and then "op, new map" and then we look desperately for a better map and such.

I think you may have misunderstood me. The idea of a custom level playlist is to specifically avoid situations like that. So after finishing a level, the next level in the playlist loads, and another one after that. This is all automated so there won't be any head scratching as we try to find a new map.

After the 20 maps playlist is exhausted, the party is technically "over," and we can just play regular maps. At that point it's possible that people may want to explore different maps. But I'll definitely at least try to steer away from mass switching that plagued last party.

What I mean is that I don't want it to happen like it did the last party.

Re: Distorted Party: Friday 8/29

Announcement: One of the challenges of a party theme is ensuring it is enjoyable for all players. It occurred to me that the only way a Distorted Levels theme would be properly experienced would be if the player was familiar with the original, non-distorted level.

This subsequently limited my playlist to mostly stock levels, as I was sure people would be familiar with stock levels, but perhaps not many other levels. In an effort to not bore people with just stock levels, I have added several other levels which are not distorted per se but fit within the general theme of "Distortion." I hope you'll still have a blast!

PS. In the meantime, check out the old Zap game to really mess with your head. I believe there are still downloads available on Garagegames.com. The unmoving static space background (compared to the dynamic Bitfighter background) was jarring!

Is it possible to start the party earlier at like, say, 8pm EST? I won't be able to make it at 9pm EST.

Re: Distorted Party: Friday 8/29

Thanks to everyone who played last night! We peaked at 8 people and held consistent 3v3 for several rounds. While numbers weren't amazing, I had a blast and I hope others did too!

Something we experimented with was short, feisty rounds of 4-5 min each. I think these are more fun than 8-10 min rounds, at least when it comes to small numbers. There were several occasions in which the time would creep up and require us to play aggressive in the last few seconds instead of slacking off, which was an awesome external factor.

For those who couldn't make it, there may be a Rerun event in the future. I also need to polish some of the levels and trim some others.

Nice! I would love to participate, I'm sorry for not showing. I was moving into my college dorm that very day. :\
