GridSize removal

Hello Bitfighters,

I'd like to get a feel for how the community uses the 'GridSize' feature of the level editor. We are thinking of removing it.

(Note that it is broken in 018 - levels that are different than the default still use the default of 255).

Is GridSize still being used?
Was it ever used often?
Is it necessary now that we have in-editor resizing?

Part of our motivation is that ForceFieldProjectors and Turrets are loaded and sometimes saved slightly 'off' in the editor; and this is due to the object coordinates being divided by the GridSize. Removing GridSize will let us tackle this problem (and others).

Thoughts? Concerns? Approvals?

Thanks!

Re: GridSize removal

Given that its currently broken so *nobody* ever actually uses it, its safe to remove.

In Zap! it was used often, in absence of a scale tool.

Heh, I used it once before I knew of the scaling. Nobody uses it I think anyway

Re: GridSize removal

I have never used GridSize, but only because I never knew how. It seemed like a cool enough tool but understnading how it works is not very user-friendly.

Re: GridSize removal

well the lower the number, the more compressed the grid is, so more precision.

Re: GridSize removal

Well, sure. But you're just telling me what the tool does, which I'm already aware of -- it scales things. Knowing how to use it and how to use it effectively is another matter.

But hey, I don't need to know that now. I just wanted to point out that this was why it wasn't being used by me, and potentially other players too. Reading between the lines if I've been able to make levels without ever using it, then it's probably not a hugely important feature, at least in my opinion.

Re: GridSize removal

removing it would help repairing lots-o-bugs, which is worth it, in my opinion

amgine,

How does it help you when compared to the in-editor scale tool?

Re: GridSize removal

Can we not let this topic derail?

Raptor, I wasn't aware there was a separate "scale tool," where can I find this feature?

Re: GridSize removal

If you press F1 in the editor, then go to page 2 (with the arrow keys). It tells you:

'Scale selection Ctrl-Shift-X'

Re: GridSize removal

i scale the grid size up to help make more precise wall placment. on a related note scaling has problems as it only rescales walls and zones and doesnt always but not quite count for object placement and keeps them in place.

on a unrelated no wall join needs some work....

Re: GridSize removal

GridSize was kind of nice because it allowed for clean coordinates while scaling. (1 1 2 2) instead of (0.0001 0.0001 0.0002 0.0002)

Maybe it's outlived its usefulness, though.

Re: GridSize removal

There seem to be fewer and fewer reasons to edit the raw level file. We haven't eliminated all of them yet, but the days of manipulating coordinates by hand may be behind us.
