14:31:02watusimoto1hello
14:31:09watusimoto1 is now known as watusimoto
14:31:09raptorhi
14:31:45watusimotoI fixed all the problems I was having with moving statics around, and putting the console stuff into gamemanager
14:32:06raptoroooo... you started that...
14:32:06watusimotothough I think my underlying problem is still there (tests crashing due to static initialization issues)
14:32:28watusimotoI did not start working on ogconsole
14:32:37watusimotothis is jsut shuffling things around
14:32:43CrazyLinuxNerd has joined
14:32:44raptorok
14:32:46watusimototrying to get more junk out of main.cpp
14:33:14watusimototrying to create a little more predictablity in the static initialization process
14:33:30watusimotobut really trying to make the tests run more smoothly
14:33:37raptorif you ever get to a point that compiles, could you check-in as soon as possible? I only ask because my refactor is gnarly enough to want to rebase as much as possible with your changes
14:33:43watusimotoyes
14:33:46watusimotoI can check in tonight
14:33:58watusimotobut I may have to include broken tests
14:34:07watusimotowhich is the only thing holding me back for the last two nights
14:34:24raptori don't mind broken tests... i already have 3 or so broken, i think
14:34:29watusimotoha
14:34:47watusimotook, I'll do a commit tonight
14:34:52watusimotoor rather a push
14:35:00watusimotoI have everything but the tests already committed
14:35:28raptorok
14:36:28raptorbesides your recent test changes, do the tests fully pass for you?
14:38:37raptorbecause this has been my output for a while now: always seems to segfault somewhere: http://pastie.org/private/nlg8hojma9mgnasjgmacg
14:40:01watusimotoI haven't run the full test suite for a while... but I was under the impression that all tests were generally passing except one related to robots
14:40:10raptorme too
14:40:15raptor... until i checked
14:40:25watusimotoGameTest.TeamGameWinners --> should be passing
14:40:30raptorbut i suspect that some platform errors have creeped in...
14:40:33watusimotoif this one is broken, something is wrong
14:40:49raptoryes, which is why i think platform errors
14:41:25watusimotoInputCodeManager::isValidInputString("#") --> this should also be passing... but... it _is_ a valid input string, so the test might be wrong
14:41:39watusimotounless the test is written backwards
14:41:45watusimotobut should be passing
14:42:00watusimotoIntegrationTest.LevelReadingAndItemPropagation --> should be passing
14:42:36watusimotobasically, all those should be passing. I'll run the whole suite tonight
14:43:09raptorok. please do so from a clean compile, too... just in case :)
14:43:16watusimotook
14:43:29raptori still suspect platform errors - like Linux is destructing objects too quickly or something
14:44:16watusimotoI would suspect my recent work, except you don't have it
14:44:35watusimotobut most of those failures are not related to object lifetimes
14:45:01watusimotoand I am a bit surprised that they are failing... they are all related to different things
14:45:19watusimotoperhaps I changed something in one of the core test methods that they all use that is causing mayhem
14:46:09watusimotowhen you make a change to a client object, you need to idle a few cycles for that change to have time to propagate to the server, and vice-versa
14:46:26watusimotoperhaps there is a missing idle cycle somewhere that affects things systematically
14:46:55watusimoto(when testing, you usually create a linked GamePair object, that has one or more clients bound to a server)
14:47:21watusimoto(there are lots of utility methods I have created to do stuff like run a chat cmd from one of the clients, so we can study the impact on the system as a whole)
14:47:45raptori remember running into the idle() problem a few times
14:47:47watusimoto(so I am hoping one of those utility methods may be misbehaving, causing random errors in many places)
14:47:56raptorbut i haven't been faithful in writing/maintaining tests...
14:48:05watusimotoI'll take a look
14:48:26watusimotothis one should be very easy to track down:
14:48:27watusimotoInputCodeManager::isValidInputString("#")
14:48:45watusimotoI made a change recently related to this, and I know the test was passing at that point
14:49:19watusimotoI further know that this invovles very little "extra" stuff -- it is a relatively simple check to see if the key handler knows about the "#" key
14:49:44watusimotoso if it is failing, either you don't have the latest code, or there is a larger issue
14:49:58raptorlike true == false
14:50:06watusimotosomething close to that
14:50:44raptorand you're using the same gtest libraries?
14:50:55raptorsilly question, i know
14:51:00raptorjust being thorough
14:51:39LordDVG Quit (Remote host closed the connection)
14:53:36watusimotoyes
14:53:49watusimotomost of my utility code is in TestUtils
14:53:57watusimotobut the frameowk is all gtest
14:54:04watusimotowhich I really like, btw
14:54:10raptoryeah, me too
14:54:10watusimotohey!
14:54:12watusimotoI did it!
14:54:17watusimotohooray!!!!!!
14:54:21raptorbalanced an egg?
14:54:37watusimotoI found something good to say about some library or programming paradigm!!!!!!!
14:55:11raptorhaha
14:55:43raptorwe must be positive.. with humorously acknowledging the negative from time-to-time :)
14:55:56watusimotoI told someone yesterday that is is higly ironic that my profession and my hobbies are both closely related to computing, and I hate so much of the field.
14:56:28watusimotoI guess it's like driving by the car crash... you know you shouldn't look... but you do
14:56:34watusimotofascination with the gruesome
14:56:40raptorand boy does c++ like to crash...
14:56:49watusimotomaybe that's why I end up computing
14:57:14raptormorbid fascination with segfaults
14:57:21watusimotoha, yes

23:52:02Nothing_Muchraptor: which channel are you in?
23:52:24raptor#debian-mentors and #debina-games. I asked in the games one

23:52:44raptoroops: #debian-games
23:52:56Nothing_Muchtry the mentors one
